Hocikala
is our role model/literacy program. With high drop out rates (as
high as 75%) and the highest teen suicide rates in the country
and the world, this program is dedicated to bringing successful
Native role models to schools and Boys and Girls Clubs on the
Reservations in SD to inspire the children to envision their future.
Hocikala also provides books and contest opportunities to express
themselves through art and writing. Their efforts are then published
in the Lakota Country Times, the local paper in western South
Dakota that reaches most of the reservations we serve. This letter
below comes from a girl who enjoyed writing for us and was heartbroken
when we had to stop the newspaper due to lack of funds. She even
offered us her own money to keep it going. Ayla writes to us frequently
and we love her. Keep it up, Ayla!

Dear
Christain Rose,
I
like the Hocikala because I love to write for them. It is
fun and it can improve kids writing skills which is important
in life. I like it also because it makes the kids feel more
important then what they do now. I think that it can help
kids. It helps kids be heard more. I think kids should be
heard as much as they can. I think it is important for them
to be heard because kids can suprize you in way you may never
thought they could. I mean adults want to be heard don't you
think that kids want to be heard as well? If they are not
heard then they won't know how to express them self's when
they get older. I think that the Hocikala helps kids express
them self's and be heard. those are some of the big things
that a kid want to let out. remember when you where little.
Did you not want to be heard? Also when you where little did
you not want to express your self? Kids now a days want do
be heard ans express as much as you did when you did when
you where little. So I think this helps kids a lot! I mean
do you want them to get into drugs? having this can help kids
do some thing so they are not in the streets and doing drugs.
Kids may be smarter than what some adults might think and
kids may suprize in some of the most amazing ways. So these
are some reasons I think we should keep this going.

Winds is so grateful for your help and strives to honor your trust
by making sure the children benefit from every dollar you send.
Your donations are never used for salaries and very little is
used for administration such as shipping and mailing. This year
we have received large quantities of excellent quality goods including
beds, bureaus, linens, clothing and more. It costs us $3,000 to
send out $20,000 worth of goods, so your donations actually appreciate
in value in terms of dollars spent for goods received on the reservations.
And
as you know, we make it easy for you to reach out to the children
in the way that suits you best. If you have other ideas about
how you'd like to help, please contact us at CWAdvocacyCenter@aol.com
or call 203-543-9720.
