The
Good News!
Yes, there is good news. We ARE making
a difference! Children are joining the Clubs we serve
rather then joining gangs. Writing Workshops are springing up
since our first Writing Workshop this spring.
We are sending LOVE and they are receiving it! While
we continue to provide the needed goods for impoverished children,
we are also developing programs that are being met with great
excitement.

Hocikala
(hocheekAH la): This project started as a literacy program but
has become an even more important opportunity for children to
express themselves, including the crises that leave them feeling
alone and unable to cope. Through the writing we have received,
we immediately recognized the cries for help inherent in some
of their stories. We will be able to address these crises and
connect the children throughout all of the reservations. We have
two very precious elders who have spent their lives empowering
the youth on reservations who have agreed to offer their traditional
guidance to help the children see their way out of some of the
unique situations they face.
While
there are also hilarious stories and inspirational essays, the
elders words of support and encouragement will follow each story
of hardship, which we believe we help the children see they are
not alone after all, and that there are people who will listen
to them and offer help.

The
importance of Role Models:
Children
on the reservations receive little outside stimulation, with few
school field trips, limited activities and resources, and rare
opportunities to meet successful Native Americans from South Dakota
and around the country. It is our goal to inspire a bright vision
of a positive future by interviewing Native people who have been
successful in today's world while remaining close and connected
to their culture. These interviews will be included in Hocikala,
which will be published in the Lakota Country Times.
Boys
and Girls Clubs and schools are now instituting Writing Workshops
to encourage children to express themselves and see their efforts
published in Hocikala. We want every child to have an opportunity
to receive Hocikala in their school and home, but we need funding
for that. If you subscribe to Hocikala, we will be able to match
that with a subscription to the Lakota Country Times for a needy
family.

For $60, you can receive a copy of Hocikala and sponsor the subscription
of a child who will not have easy access to it. This is two subscriptions
for the price of one. For more information and to subscribe, please

Winds is so grateful for your help and strives to honor your trust
by making sure the children benefit from every dollar you send.
Your donations are never used for salaries and very little is
used for administration such as shipping and mailing. This year
we have received large quantities of excellent quality goods including
beds, bureaus, linens, clothing and more. It costs us $3,000 to
send out $20,000 worth of goods, so your donations actually appreciate
in value in terms of dollars spent for goods received on the reservations.
And
as you know, we make it easy for you to reach out to the children
in the way that suits you best. If you have other ideas about
how you'd like to help, please contact us at CWAdvocacyCenter@aol.com
or call 203-256-9720.
