2007 Warm Clothing Drive!
Each year we identify communities in South Dakota that are experiencing the greatest need and we provide them with NEW coats and shoes for the children. We have had too many unfortunate situations to send used clothing out to families, however, we have found that with the cost of shipping combined with the inconvenience of cleaning, boxing and making the trip to the Post office, it is far easier to purchase inexpensive coats from on-line retailers and have them sent directly.
While we are reluctant to endorse any particular stores, however, warm NEW coats can be purchased for children for as little as $20.00 at .Sierra Trading Post or CostCo. JC Penny at www.jcpenny.com also has a selection of coats under $30.00. Shoes can be purchased reasonably through www.shoes.com which sells discount shoes for as low as ten dollars.
Almost anyone can help these kids!
Don't forget the teens, and remember those kids are big! Plenty of adult large and extra large sizes are needed as well as the younger kids ages.
This year we hope to provide:
Cheyenne River: Last year, Cheyenne River was new to our coat drive and sadly, because a truck received the wrong instructions, many of the coats we shipped did not make it to the CRR. They still need NEW coats to be sent to the children in the most remote areas of the Cheyenne River Reservation. Often, these families cannot even afford the trip into town to pick these coats up at the Post Office, so we will ship to people who will be able to deliver them.
Clothing sent to the Emergency Childen's Shelter will be distributed among the children there who range in age from newborn to 13 years old. Kids need sweat shirts and pants, sizes range accordingly with the older kids needing the Large, X Large and even XX Large. Shoes and boots are also needed as well as underwear and socks. Anything the shelter does not need will be sent over to the Indian Child Welfare Office which knows which families are in the greatest need and will distribute them. Cheyenne
River Emergency Children's Shelter Pine Ridge: Ivis has been working on the Coat Drive for children on Pine Ridge for the last three years. This year she requests that we provide for the children who always seem left behind in so many ways. She is asking for NEW shoes for the special needs children of Pine Ridge: Can be sent to: Ivis
Black Elk Lakota Oyate Wakanyeja Owicakiyapi, (LOWO) is a child/family welfare program on Pine Ridge. We are taking over services that the state used to provide, in particular child protection cases, and we are attempting to bring our children home to native homes.
This is such an important program. It is believed that almost 1000 children have been placed off the reservation in non-native homes in the last few years. Its been said this is the modern way to destroy the reservations, by removing the children. This program needs our support in order to be successful. Please consider sending warm clothing including boots, coats, shoes, socks, underwear for children of any and all ages.

Rosebud: Madonna has participated in the Coat Drive for the last few years as well. For the last few years she has asked for shoes for the most impoverished children and teens on the Rosebud reservation but we have never made a tremendous effort. This year, lets make sure all of the children have shoes! Please send shoes to: Madonna

Help the teens on Rosebud earn money for Field Trips and sports events! We have an agreement with a The Fonder Sewing Machine store in Sioux Falls, South Dakota that will give us a percentage off of NEW sewing machines, as well as provide quilting feet, and will even donate an eleventh machine if we can purchase ten. The purpose of these sewing machines is to help the Lakota girls on the Rosebud reservation begin a business of selling quilts and other crafts. The girls were not able to fund a $2000.00 trip for twenty girls to participate in championship games in Rapid City and so they were unable to attend. These sewing machines will enable girls and boys to make and sell their crafts so they can afford field trips as well as sporting events. Changing Winds will be setting up an ebay store that will be operated by the kids themselves and they will receive 100% of the proceeds that they earn.
Please ship all NEW coats and shoes to the addresses above. Send parcel post since there are no street addresses on the reservation. If you wish, you can make a donation through PayPal for the sewing machines or coats and shoes. Every penny received will go to the places above. NO MONEY IS USED FOR ANY ADMINISTRATIVE COSTS. 100% of your donation will be utilized to provide for the children.
Changing Winds is a 501 C3 non profit educational and charity organization. Your donations are tax exempt. We are a volunteer non-profit agency and no individual receives a salary or any remuneration of any kind. 100% of all donations are used to purchase goods and services that benefit the children of the reservations in South Dakota. To receive a tax deduction, please send a copy of your receipt to: Changing
