Winter Warmth Drive

Did You Chop Your Wood Today?

Many people on the reservations have no heat in the winter,
and many communities rely solely on wood burning stoves for heat.
Irony? In some places, even wood is hard to find.

Will your children be warm this winter?
Will they have a bed with sheets and blankets?
Three meals a day? Boots and gloves?
Many children on the reservations will have none of these things.

Last year the first blizzard hit early in November,
leaving thousands without food and electricity for weeks.
The damage by the worst winter in 80 years left its mark:
roofs fell in, black mold increased, and now,
food banks have either closed or started to charge the hungry.
This year for many will be even harder then the last.

On Cheyenne River, food banks that fed the homeless and destitute have closed,
now leaving families already in dire straits hungry without hope.

Our focus has always been on the children, and this year is no different.
We continue to reach out to the Lakota children in the greatest need.
This year we are expanding our efforts into literacy and other inspirational enrichment programs
that will help the children to focus on a hopeful, positive future.

THE ONLY WAY THIS CAN BE ACHIEVED IS WITH YOUR HELP.

As always, you can send goods directly, and we have provided a list of agencies and groups that we
have worked with in years past who will get your items into the hands of children in need.

Please send NEW coats, snowboots, snowpants, gloves, scarves, hats can be sent to every one of
the following addresses. (Why new? Click here for more information.)

Here is a List of the Agencies we serve. Click each to see their requests.

Cleaning supplies of any kind

And any kind of gifts to be given to the children of any age (birth to 18 years of age)

A long stretch to even ask but even used computers or laptops.

Or anything else you would like to send along.

Any and all would be greatly appreciated and very warmly welcomed.
May the Great Spirit always watch over you and yours in this upcoming Holiday season.

This shelter always needs coats and children’s clothing (DONE!) but they also request :
New stuffed animals and toys with few pieces. There are often babies, so no small pieces please.
Sheets, towels, linens, housewares. STILL BADLY NEEDED!

This agency frequently serves families who are really struggling, some have just returned from living elsewhere and have come back with nothing. Some are regaining their children after a long absence. They need whatever you can send for people to set up house…keep dignity in mind and only send very nice used or new.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Rosebud:

My name is Webster Luxon and everyone calls me Wes. I’m the new unit director of the Boy’s and Girl’s club of Rosebud (BGCR) located in Mission S.D. I’m writing you requesting assistance for our organization. We have three units here on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. One site is located in Parmalee S.D. and the other exists directly in the heart of Rosebud S.D. The Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Rosebud is trying to provide a place to go after school to deter them from negative activities that exist here on the third poorest county in the Nation.

We would like to request at this time some jackets, hats, gloves. DONE!
Art Supplies, Archery Supplies, Board games, ring toss, tic-tac toe.
Beads and Beading Looms
Sewing machines (DONE!) and fabrics for the girls to quilt (STILL NEEDED)
Ink pens, DVD player for movie night and most of all Christmas Toys.

Thank you!
Webster Luxon

NOTE: from Christine: Last year the B & G Clubs had to close down for the winter because there was no heat. We are trying to raise money for a heater. For only $750 we can keep the Clubs open all winter! DONE!

Boys and Girls Clubs of Three Districts (Crow Creek)
The Boys and Girls Clubs of Crow Creek have requested NEW socks and NEW underwear for the children. We would like o raise as many as possible. It is unfortunate that these items are considered luxuries on the reservations we serve.

Notebooks, pens, folders, puzzles, markers, arts & crafts projects, stickers, scrapbooking projects, children's DVD's, coloring books, reading incentive books, little prizes for points earned for reading, toys for ages 6-12, fabric for sewing projects (received), cone thread, summer clothing for the kids.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Cheyenne River
In Cheyenne River, the unemployment has been getting worse and worse. The tribe has run out of money and many people are working for free. The food banks have closed so those who were hungry now have no where to turn, and the situation is reaching crisis proportions. Please send healthy non-perishable foods other then pasta. Beans, granola, canned meats and fish, oatmeal, canned fruit and vegetables.

Electric heaters have also been requested. We have always done very well by buying electric heaters on Amazon.com

Boys and Girls Clubs of Lower Brule
This Club was lucky enough to receive a pool that will be open year round. This is an incredible opportunity for the children to have healthy, wholesome activities, however they cannot use the pool if they do not have bathing suits. We have been asked if we can please send children’s bathing suits, as most of the children do not have them and cannot get them.

Lakota Youth Arts Foundation Inc COMPLETED!
This is a new organization that is working hard to provide a better life for the children of Wanblee, on Pine Ridge. Please send games, art supplies as well as new coats and snow boots for the children. This small town of 300 is far from the center of Pine Ridge, and is hours from the nearest town providing jobs. The unemployment and suicide rate is sky high right now and it is critical to lift these children’s spirits.

LaPlant Community on the Cheyenne River Reservation COMPLETED!
Last summer we received reports of hardships in the LaPlant community. A barbeque was planned by one of the groups that we arranged to visit there, and they told us that people were taking burgers home because it was probably the only meat they would have in a week. The people there really need help. Again, the communities that we serve are remote, have little access to transportation and struggle just to meet basic needs.

Please send warm clothing, coats and even shoes for children of all ages from infant to XXL teen. These will be distributed among the children and elderly in need.

We LOVE people connecting with people.

One of our strengths has always been that people reach across the country and send goods they have purchased directly to those who need it.

You can be sure that the item you touched will touch the heart of a child. Send us a copy of the receipt and mailing info and you will also receive a letter for tax deduction purposes.

Call or write to us anytime and let us know what you are sending so we can keep up with who still needs what!
