Changing Winds
Introduces
Two NEW Programs!!!!

Changing Winds is beginning two new programs geared to keeping children in school.

Incentive Program

We will be working with two tribal schools to provide incentives for attendance and good
grades. Children will earn points that will go towards shoes and sneakers, coats, or iPods
and sports equipment. The incentive program will begin in the third grade and go through
high school. Incentive programs are working in some schools already, but the schools we will
be assisting do not have the funding to institute the program.

We will be working with almost 300 students immediately, and in order to begin, we must raise $10,000.

Of course, we will continue to provide seriously impoverished children in the greatest need
with basic necessities such as coats, warm clothing, snowboots and blankets. But it is time to
move forward, to give the children a sense of pride in accomplishing achievable goals.

Parent Leadership Training Institute

Changing Winds is bringing the Parent Leadership Training Institute to the reservations in SD.
PLTI has already tailored the program for the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. In
communities throughout Connecticut, marginalized people have become pillars of strength
who have learned how to tackle the issues they face.

The program has been shown to empower people to become community leaders by teaching
them about the process of bringing change. Those who have taken the program work
towards their childrens education, slashed drop out rates and created opportunities to better
their own lives and their communities.

These are the first steps that need to be taken to keep children in school. If the children
cannot read or write, they will never be able to reach their potential. If the parents do not
care, the children will continue the cycle of depression and hopelessness.
